The Philippines Bags the 2009 UK NOA Award “Offshoring Destination of the Year”

- Christine Crisostomo, 17 Nov 2009

written by Cris Gironella

The Philippines was the National Outsourcing Association’s 2009 Offshoring Destination of the Year in the 4th NOA Awards held on October 15 in London.

The Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPAP) submitted the Philippine entry which was evaluated according to the following criteria:
1. What advantages would the country have that would appeal to UK companies?
2. What level of penetration into the UK market was achieved by the country in the past year?
3. In what areas of outsourcing does the country specialize in?
4. Testimonials from UK companies

It bested four other countries for this award: Egypt, Russia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

The Philippines is rapidly emerging as a major player in the outsourcing industry. It won the same NOA award back in 2007 and Manila placed 3rd as an established outsourcing city in the Tholons Study that same year. In 2008, the Philippine Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry generated US$ 6.1 billion and employed 400,000 workers making the Philippines the world’s second biggest BPO player next only to India.

The award comes in time for the BPO Networking Forum on Nov. 16 and 17, and for the NOA’s 7th Annual Sourcing Summit on Nov. 18 and 19, both to be held in London. The Philippines will be sending delegates to both events.

The NOA is a United Kingdom–based nonprofit organization under the umbrella of the European Outsourcing Association with its members falling under three main categories – users, suppliers and support services. Its vision is to promote best practices and innovation in the outsourcing industry.
